For patients battling life-limiting conditions, there may come a time when the curative treatments are no longer showing progress, and a physician advises the family to consider hospice. This conversation is most likely to be initiated when the physician believes the patient may have 6 months to live.

Hospice is a type of healthcare which focuses on the comfort and quality of life of a patient rather than curative treatment. Hospice care teams include a chaplain, nurse, social worker, volunteer services, and hospice aide. This team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to attend to the patient’s spiritual, physical, and emotional needs and the family’s support. After a patient passes, the hospice team continues to provide bereavement support to the family for an additional 13 months. This support includes phone calls, one on one meetings, literature resources, and group support. The Caris bereavement program is fluid and adaptable, to meet individuals where they are in their grief.

How is hospice paid for?

As a Medicare and Medicaid approved provider, Caris Healthcare services are covered at 100% with no cost to the patient. Medicare is a government provided health insurance plan for those 65 and over. Medicaid is also government provided health coverage for those with limited income and resources.  If the patient is not a Medicare or Medicaid recipient, care will be covered by Tricare (military insurance) or most private insurance.

In many cases, establishing care through hospice saves families money as  prescriptions, home care, and medical supplies related to comfort and quality of life are covered once the patient is admitted into hospice care. A Caris Healthcare team member will work with your provider to confirm coverage.

 How does hospice care begin?

When a family reaches out to Caris, we will meet with you that day or at your preferred convenience to discuss how we can help. We will collect information about you and your physician if you have one and  will begin care as soon as you would like us to.

Where does hospice care take place?

Our Caris Healthcare team will care for you wherever you live. This can mean providing support in a skilled nursing facility, assisted living community, or in the comfort of your home.

Do you have additional questions? You can reach us 24 hours a day by calling 866-694-4848.
