Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Jackson

Many people do not know that volunteers play a critical role in caring for our hospice patients. While our nurses provide the medical support, our chaplains provide the spiritual support, and our social workers provide the emotional support, our volunteers offer companionship and connection. As we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 20-26), we took some time to speak with one of our beloved volunteers about why she has dedicated her time to this type of work.

What made you decide to volunteer for a hospice organization?

I knew that I wanted to volunteer before I retired last year. My mom was a patient at Heritage Hall prior to her death four years ago. When visiting I would see patients who had  few visitors, and it made me sad. I was not able to visit my mom very much because I lived out of town. I never wanted anyone to feel alone, especially after my mom was put on hospice. I wanted to be with her in the end but unfortunately, I was not able to make it back when that happened. I feel that everyone should have someone to “love” them as they transition. Just a hand to hold to let someone know that they are not alone and are cared for.

What is your favorite part about volunteering in hospice?

My favorite part of volunteering is the smiles and conversations with my patients. I look forward to seeing them week to week. They bring me so much joy especially if they ask for something, and I can assist with that request whether for a specific food, the smile from a stuffed animal, or a short devotional. They are very happy people and it makes me so happy to be a part of bringing them joy.

Is Caris Healthcare the first volunteer opportunity you embarked on?

This is my first official volunteer experience however with my church in the past I have volunteered at a nursing home and did church services on Sunday’s.

Do you have advice to share with other individuals that may be undecided about volunteering?

I would encourage anyone with a desire to serve to make it a volunteer experience with Caris. This is an amazing experience that brings such comfort to our patients. Just to know that they are cared for and not forgotten means so much them. Sometimes just to hold a hand or give a hug goes a long way. I feel this volunteer experience brings me so much joy each week. It probably benefits me more than them. I look forward to the day that I can go check on my friends. The commitment as a volunteer is minimal but the impact is great. I would encourage anyone with just a little free time and looking for something rewarding to do with their time please join the Caris Volunteer team.
