Honoring Our Loved Ones

The milestones of life move in a circular fashion until what has begun meets its natural course. These milestones bring to each of us feelings of pride and accomplishment, disappointment, failure, success, and humility. The world turns; each day weathering our appearance, maturing our features, and moving us gradually toward the final mile of our earthly journey. We cannot see the tapestry of our life as it is woven in the moment.

In our ideal world parents are eternal. It seems unthinkable that years of marriage culminate in visits to a lonely stone, or that people can ever truly be separated from each other, even in death. It is in the dimming of the day that we can look back and reflect on the lives we have lived; how each relationship colored our journey. The initial loss can bend us in waves of grief, gently replaced overtime with our memories. The smells of Grandma baking in the kitchen, recollecting advice from Dad, remembering the time Mom made everything all better when we had a broken heart. These are the memories that will linger the longest.

This year has brought unique challenges, unprecedented during our lifetime. When so many stressors exist, feelings of loss and grief can intensify. Challenging times can also bring people together, make them stronger, and rally a sense of hope. Social distancing may limit on our ability to gather together for now, but it can never overwhelm our ability to come together in spirit to celebrate the lives of the people we have lost and honor their memory.
