In 2015 all Caris Healthcare offices achieved level four status, the highest level of achievement in the We Honor Veterans program. As each Caris office opens they will accept the challenge to fulfill the requirements of the We Honor Veterans Level 4 designation. Caris’ commitment to the We Honor Veterans program demonstrates its commitment to supporting veterans by meeting their unique needs and the needs of their families in the end-of-life journey.

 

WHY WE HONOR VETERANS

Bud Alley Caris Healthcare Veteran VolunteerThere are 26 million veterans alive today. More than a quarter of Americans who die each year are veterans. A huge wave of new veterans from more recent periods of service will need hospice care. NHPCO and the Veterans Administration tell us that only about a third of veterans have enrolled for VA benefits. Many are not aware of the benefits available to them, including the Medicare Hospice Benefit and VA-paid hospice care.

Veterans’ life experiences can influence their hospice needs. They may be affected by:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder from combat
  • Prisoner of war experience
  • Stoic attitudes that view fear and admitting pain as signs of weakness

Caris’ individualized Plan of Care ensures that Veterans are honored by tailoring their hospice care to meet their specific physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Caris Healthcare Veteran Volunteer

Caris is committed to serving veterans. Caris’ commitment is lived out by Caris’ staff members, some of whom are veterans and by Caris’ Volunteers. As a part of the We Honor Veterans program, we enlists veteran volunteers who share a profound understanding of veterans’ needs and make a difference in the lives of our patients.

Veteran to Veteran Volunteers know what these patients have gone through because they have been there themselves.

Veteran to Veteran volunteers have a deep desire to serve an underserved population with special needs – other veterans. Veteran volunteers’ understanding of other veterans supports life review and healing at the end of life.
