Meet our Compliance Officer

A highly regarded expert on medical record review and compliance under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, Sylvia L. Singleton, RN, leads Caris Healthcare’s comprehensive programs that ensure full and complete compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, standards and guidelines. Sylvia brought 10 years of hands-on nursing experience and more than a dozen years of working with medical records to identify questionable business patterns for review to her role as Corporate Compliance Officer for Caris Healthcare.

Originally hired at Caris in November 2012 as Internal Auditor, Sylvia was promoted less than a year later to her current position, in which she is responsible for the design, structure, implementation, education and subsequent auditing of Caris’ comprehensive corporate compliance plan. She reports regularly to the organization’s Board of Directors on compliance-related programs and activities as well as recommendations for changes and enhancements.

Sylvia also is responsible for investigating all calls to the Caris Values Line (1.800.273.8452). Employees, volunteers, medical directors, vendors and contracted partners are encouraged to call the Caris Values Line anytime they see something that makes them uncomfortable or seems wrong. Under Caris policy, the caller always remains anonymous and there’s never retaliation for calling the Caris Values Line.

Before joining Caris, Sylvia held a progression of positions over a 15-year career with Palmetto GBA/Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina, one of the nation’s largest providers of high volume claims and transaction processing, contact center operations and technical services to the federal government and other commercial customers. During that time Sylvia helped develop local coverage determinations and for 10 years she served as Manager of Medical Review, supervising a cross-functional team of medical review nurses and educators, business analysts, workflow coordinators and claims technicians responsible for reviewing claims for Medicare Part A, Part B, Home Health and Hospice.

Sylvia began her nursing career at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter, SC, working as a nursing technician while studying for her nursing degree. At Tuomey she initially served as a patient care nurse on the Telemetry Unit and then transitioned to associate care manager in the Progressive Care Unit. She later became a preceptor for newly hired nurses at Lexington Medical Center in Lexington, SC. She also worked as a case manager at Health South, which eventually led to her work in medical record review at Palmetto GBA.

As a leader and advocate for hospice quality and compliance, Sylvia serves as an at-large member of the Board of Directors of The Carolinas Center, the leading voice for quality end-of-life care in the Carolinas. She has served as a presenter for both The Carolinas Center and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization on subjects ranging from general inpatient care to medical records review and compliance.

Sylvia attended the University of South Carolina before changing her academic focus to nursing. She obtained her associates in nursing degree from Central Carolina Technical College, Sumter, SC.
